The invention relates to a process for obtaining monacolin J derivatives (I), wherein R1 is COR2, wherein R2 is selected from C1-C15 alkyl, C3-C15 cycloalkyl, C2-C15 alkenyl, C2-C15 alkynyl, aryl and heterocyclyl; which comprises producing monacolin J by fermentation from a monacolin J-producing microorganism; and acylating the hydroxyl group present in the C8 position of the monacolin J previously obtained by means of adding a suitable acylating agent to the fermentation medium to obtain the desired monacolin J derivative (I).
