The present invention relates to dimeric quaternary pyridinium salts of general formula (I): wherein R is a linear or branched alkyl or alkenylene or alkyne group having from 8 to 18 carbon atoms; Z is a spacer having a bivalent structure represented by a formula selected from the following list, connected directly to the position 3 or 4 of pyridine ring: X is a halogen atom of chlorine or bromine or iodine; possessing biocidal activity, and, in particular, applicable as an antiseptic and disinfectant active compounds. Methods and processes for preparation of compounds of formula (I) are described herein.

An M2L4 quadruplehelicate, formed by wrapping four molecules of 1,4‐bis(3‐pyridyloxy)benzene (L1) about two palladium(II) centers, is shown to bind anions within its internal cavity. 1H NMR exchange experiments provide a quantitative measure of anionselectivity and reveal a preference for ClO4− over the other tetrahedral anions BF4− and ReO4− and the octahedral anion PF6−. The encapsulation of a PF6- ion within a quadruply stranded helicate (shown schematically) results from the self-assembly of four molecules of 1,4-bis(3-pyridyloxy)benzene and two PdII ions. This represents not only the first example of a coordinatively saturated quadruplehelicate, but also the first example of the encapsulation of a complex anion by a helicate.

The centroid of the benzene ring of 1,4-bis(3-pyridyloxy)benzene, C16H12N2O2, lies on a crystallographic center of symmetry. The pyridine rings lie trans to each other at an angle of 66.9(1)degrees to the central benzene ring. rr-Stacking interactions between the benzene and pyridine rings in adjacent molecules lead to a sinusoidal packing motif along the b axis.
