  The present invention relates to 9-amino-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroacridines and related compounds of formula 1 wherein Y ix C= 0 or CHOH; R1 is hydrogen or loweralkyl; R2 is hydrogen, loweralkyl, or phenylloweralkyl; R3 is hydrogen, OR4 wherein R4 is hydrogen or COR5 wherein R5 is loweralkyl, X is hydrogen, loweralkyl, halogen, loweralkoxy, hydroxy, or trifluoromethyl, the geometric or optical isomers thereof, N-oxides, thereof, or the pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof, which are useful in relieving memory dysfunction and are thus indicated in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
