C4-regioselective prenylation of 5-substituted tryptophans as well as truncated tryptophanderivatives was achieved using a set of prenlyltransferases. Conversions were increased by designing improved variants and the feasibility of preparative transformations was successfully demonstrated reaching isolated yields up to 90 %.
