  Dianion of diethyl succinate reacted readily with alkylating agents and carbonyl compounds to give α,β-dialkylsubstituted diethyl succinate and paraconic esters respectively. The conversion of some paraconic esters into 4-carboethoxycyclopentenones was also demonstrated.
