    suppression of both the crown ring and one of the two sidearms based on complexation with the metal cation. The selectivity for alkaline earth metal cations was highly dependent on the fitness of the host cavity and the guest size. Although most of the fluorophores did not respond to alkali metal cations, only trans-7a containing an 18-crown-6 ring showed K+ selectivity.

    The increased Lewis acidity in organotin-functionalized crown ethers X3SnCH2[19]-crown-6 (5, X = I; 6, X = Br; 7, X = Cl) not only resulted in ditopic complexation of sodium/potassium halides, but also offers an excellent strategy to manipulate through intramolecular O→Sn interactions the selectivity of the crown ether moiety towards Na+/K+ depending on the solvent.

    The syntheses of the organotin-substituted crown ethers Ph2XSnCH2[19]-crown-6 (1, X = Ph; 2, X = Br; 3, X = 1; 4, X = Cl; 5, X = F; 6, X = SCN) and Ph2XSnCH2Sn(Y)PhCH2-[19]-crown-6 (7, X = Y = Ph; 8, X = Ph, Y = 1; 9, X = Y = 1) and of the ditopic complexes 5 . KF, 6 . KSCN, and 9 . KF are reported. These compounds are characterized by elemental analyses, H-1, C-13, and Sn-119 NMR spectroscopies, electrospray mass spectrometry, and in the cases of 1-4, 8, 9 . H2O, and 9 . KF also by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The coordination geometry about the tin atoms in compounds I and 8 (Sn2) is distorted tetrahedral, whereas it is trigonal bipyramidal for the tin atoms in compounds 2, 3, 4, 8 (Sn1), 9 . H2O, and 9 . KF.
