7-Fluoro sialicacid was prepared and activated as cytidinemonophosphate (CMP) ester. The synthesis started with d-glucose, which was efficiently converted into N-acetyl-4-fluoro-4-deoxy-d-mannosamine. Aldolase catalyzed transformation yielded the corresponding fluorinated sialicacid which was activated as CMP ester using three different synthetases in the presence as well as in the absence of pyrophosphatase

A trisaccharide containing a d-mannosamine moiety and a tetrasaccharide containing an l-rhamnan chain that are found in the cell walls of Azospirillum brasilense S17 were synthesized concisely and in excellent yields.
