  Four new compounds related to azaphilones, designated falconensins A (1), B (2), C (3), and D (4), were isolated from the mycelium of Emericella falconensis, a new ascomycetous fungus isolated from Venezuelan soil. The structures of falconensins A to D (1-4) were confirmed by spectroscopic investigation and chemical correlations. These falconensins are the hydrogenated azaphilones.

  The synthesis of a number of grisa-3′,5′-diene-2′,3-diones by oxidative coupling of substituted 2,2′-dihydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenones is described. The rearrangement of these grisadienediones to depsidones under basic, acidic, and thermal conditions is described and the mechanisms of these reactions are discussed.   A new azaphilone derivative, falconensin H (6), was isolated from mycelia of Emericella falconensis, together with previously reported falconensins A-D (1-4) and 3, 3'-dihydroxy-5, 5'-dimethyldiphenyl ether (5). The structure of 6 was elucidated by spectroscopic investigation and chemical correlations. Among the compounds isolated, only 5 showed antibacterial activity.
