    Volatile mixed-ligand compounds of Cd(i-Bu2PS2)(2) with Phen, 2,2'-Bipy, and 4,4'-Bipy were synthesized. Their single crystals were grown. X-ray diffraction data (a CAD4 diffractometer, MoKalpha radiation, 2140 F-hkl, R = 0.0251) were used to determine the structure of [Cd(4,4'-Bipy)(i-Bu2PS2)(2)]. The crystals are monoclinic: a = 14.678(3) Angstrom, b = 11.866(2) Angstrom, c = 19.655(4) Angstrom, beta = 102.17(3)degrees, V = 3346(1) Angstrom (3), Z = 4, rho (calcd) = 1.364 g/cm(3), space group C2/c. The structure is built from linear polymeric chains arranged along the [010] direction. The coordination polyhedron of the Cd atom is a distorted octahedron (4S + 2N). The thermal properties of these compounds, studied both in air and in vacuo, allow one to use them for preparing CdS films by chemical precipitation from the gas phase.

    Complexes (A)[Gd(L)4] and [Gd(Phen)(L)3] (L = iso-Bu2PS -2 , C4H8NCS -2 ; A = NH +4 , Et4N+) are synthesized. The crystal structure of compound [Gd(Phen)(iso-Bu2PS2)3] · MeCN is determined by X-ray diffraction analysis (CIF file CCDC no. 1455418).     Abstract Bis(diisobutyldithiophosphinato)cadmium(II) (1) and bis(diisobutyldithiophosphinato)zinc(II) (2) have been synthesised and their X-ray single crystal structures determined. Both compounds have been used as precursors to grow thin films of CdS and ZnS, respectively, by low-pressure metal organic chemical vapour deposition (LP-MOCVD).

    Ligand exchange of thermochromic, LETC, systems exhibiting a reversible change in absorbance of electromagnetic radiation as the temperature of the system is reversibly changed are described. The described LETC systems include one or more than one transition metal ion, which experiences thermally induced changes in the nature of the complexation or coordination around the transition metal ion(s) and, thereby, the system changes its ability to absorb electromagnetic radiation as the temperature changes. In accordance with certain aspects of the present invention, a thermochromic system is disclosed comprising a transition metal ion and a ligand wherein the ligand comprises a nitrogen-containing five or six membered heterocyclic compound that coordinates through the nitrogen atom to the transition metal ion in a HεMLC formed between the transition metal ion and the ligand. In accordance with other aspects of the present invention, thermochromic systems are disclosed comprising a transition metal ion with particularly useful ligands, such as phosphine compounds, tridentate ligands that coordinate through three nitrogen atoms, bidentate ligands, or ortho hindered pyridine monodentate ligands.

The described LETC systems include one or more than one transition metal ion, which experiences thermally induced changes in the nature of the complexation or coordination around the transition metal ion(s) and, thereby, the system changes its ability to absorb electromagnetic radiation as the temperature changes. In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, a thermochromic system is disclosed comprising a first metal ion and a second metal ion and at least one ligand that complexes with the first metal ion to form a LεMLC and complexes with the second metal ion to form a HεMLC wherein an increase in temperature of the system results in a reversible net increase in its ability to absorb light energy in the 400 nm to 1400 nm range due to the ligand transferring from the first metal ion to the second metal ion.
