We have explored here the scope of the age-old diethyl malonate-based accesses to α-aminoesters involving Knoevenagel condensations of diethyl malonate on aldehydes, reductions of the resulting alkylidenemalonates, the preparation of the corresponding α-hydroxyimino esters and their final reduction.
