Sugar and Spice…︁: The use of renewable resources to produce fine chemicals is an underdeveloped area. A waste‐free technology will be necessary to further convert platform chemicals, readily available from biomass. We show that furfurals, which can be obtained from C5 sugars, can be coupled with terpenes in up to 95 % yield through ruthenium‐catalyzed reductivecouplings developed by Krische et al.
An efficient cross-addition reaction of dienes with aldehydes was developped by using RuHCI(CO)(PPh3)(3) as a catalyst to give a wide variety of beta,gamma-unsaturated ketones, where a pi-allylruthenium species, derived from hydroruthenation of diene, may be involved as a key intermediate.
