Blue polydiacetylene films were prepared from the Langmuir–Schaefer (LS) and Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films of the cadmium salt of 10,12-pentacosadiynoicacid, CH3(CH2)11CCCC(CH2)8COOH, and the CC stretching modes of the Raman spectra of the LS and LBfilms were observed at 2068 and 2079 cm−1, respectively. The ability of polarization modulation IR reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM–IRRAS) to study the air/water interface is presented. A brief description of the set-up and of the experimental procedure is given. Theoretical simulations accounting for the uniaxial nature of the spread monolayer lead to optimum experimental conditions (71 ° for the angle of incidence) and to a specific surface selection rule. Application to the study of cadmium arachidate, dimyristolyl phosphatidylcholine (DMPC) and polypeptidic Langmuir films illustrates the potential uses of this method.

Structure of CdS nanoparticles containing cadmium arachidate LB films

The fabrication of particles in LangmuirâBlodgett films of cadmium icosanoate and nonacosa-10,12-diynoate is followed using a quartz crystal microbalance. The mass changes accompanying the exposure of the film to hydrogen sulfide are consistent with a chemical reaction in the film which also produces the acid form of the surfactant. Film thermal stability is greatly reduced after the particles are formed, a result also consistent with formation of the more volatile acid form. The extent of film removal by heating/outgassing suggests that particles are capped by adsorbed icosano or diynoic acid. It is likely that this capping plays a role in particle growth control.
