    Synergy Effect of Sodium Acetate and Glycosidically Bound Volatiles on the Release of Volatile Compounds from the Unscented Cut Flower (Delphinium elatum L. “Blue Bird”)

    Many modern floricultural varieties have lost their scent during traditional breeding programs. The factors that result in the nonscent emission of some cut flowers remain unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate whether the nonscent emission is due to one of the factors, the lack of suitable substrates (or precursors of scent compounds). Using solid-phase microextraction and dynamic headspace volatile sampling techniques, the supplement of nonvolatile compounds such as 2-coumaric acid glucoside to the unscented cut flower such as Delphinium elatum L. "Blue Bird" enhanced the emission of scent from the flower, which was sufficient for detection by the human olfaction. Interestingly, compared with feeding with each compound, the combination of sodium acetate and 2-coumaric acid glucoside showed the synergy effect on enhancement of coumarin, a cherry leaf-like scent emission from the flower, which is due to one of factors that sodium acetate enhanced the activity of beta-glucosidase being involved in the formation of the scent compound. These results suggest that some enzymes responsible for the formation of floral scents indeed occur in the unscented flowers such as Delphinium elatum L. "Blue Bird", and the non- or low-scent emission of the flowers are due to the lack of suitable substrates.

    The present invention provides a sustained-release aromatic, characterized in that the aromatic comprises at least one perfume derivative as an active component selected from glycosides of perfumes, phosphoric acid ester derivatives of perfumes, amino acid derivatives of perfumes and carboxylic acid derivatives of perfumes, and contains no enzyme or acid which decomposes the perfume derivative, wherein the perfume derivative is decomposed by bacteria usually present on the skin or yeast to release a perfume component to exhibit aroma. The present invention also provides a method for the detection of micro-organisms using the aforesaid sustained-release aromatic. As the sustained-release aromatic of the present invention releases a perfume component only when it is decomposed by micro-organisms such as bacteria usually present on the skin or yeast, the amount of perfumes to be used can be extremely reduced. The sustained-release aromatic of the present invention is also excellent in keeping aroma. The stability with the passage of time of the sustained-release aromatic of the present invention is much better than that of the prior art because the perfume component is contained in the form of derivative. The sustained-release aromatic of the present invention is useful for applications on the skin, head skin or hair of human beings or animals, on clothes, or in drinks and foods, or as an indicator for detecting micro-organisms.

    2-Phenylethyl alpha-glucoside was synthesized from 2-phenylethanol and alpha-D-glucose in the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate at 75 degrees C and was isolated by continuous extraction, during which hexane was used to remove the excess 2-phenylethanol and then ethyl acetate was used to isolate the product. The spectral data including IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, and MS of this compound are presented.
