New vanadium oxazoline catalysts for epoxidation of allylic alcohols

The new vanadium complexes, VO(hoz)21 and VO(hoz)2Cl 2 (hoz=2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)-2-oxazoline), catalyze the epoxidation of allylicalcohols with tert-butylhydroperoxide. Catalyst 2 with the oxidation state (V) exhibits superior activity in comparison to 1, producing yields from 88 to >99% under mild conditions, 60°C and non-dry solvent.

Functionalised epoxides have been found to undergo high yielding and regioselective ring opening with hydroxylamines in methanol to give β-hydroxyhydroxylamines. Suitable substrates were found to undergo a reverse Cope cyclisation on heating in CHCl3 to give functionalised piperidine N-oxides.

Novel alkyl glyceryl ether alcohols, suitable as intermediates for the preparation of biodegradable surfactants, are prepared by reacting a stoichiometric excess of C10-C20 linear alkyl alcohol with glycidol predissolved in hexylacetate.
