We have prepared the amphiphilic molecularcatalyst [CoIII(LOC18)(pyrr)2]ClO4 (1), where LOC18 is the deprotonated form of N,N′-[4,5-bis(octadecyloxy)-1,2-phenylene]dipicolinamide. Species 1 can be anchored onto a carbon black support to yield the assembly [email protected], which can catalyze wateroxidation at an affordable onset overpotential of 0.32 V, with a current density of 10 mA/cm2 at 0.37

An organic thin film formed of molecules of at least one dye compound selected from the compounds represented by the following general formulae:
where X is a hydrogen atom, a methyl group, or a halogen atom, R¹ is an electron attractive group substituted with a hydrophobic group having 12 or more carbon atoms, Z is either = 0 or = NR², and R² is an electron attractive group or an electron attractive group substituted with an organic group having 1 to 50 carbon atoms; and
R - (DS) (III)
where R is an organic hydrophobic group having terminated with two long chain alkyl groups or an organic hydrophobic group having a steroid carbon skeleton, and DS is a dyestuff group having a dye skeleton of tetracyanoquino dimethane, N, N′-dicyanoquinonediimine, N-cyanoquinoneimine, benzoquinone, pheylenediamine, tetrathiafulvalne, tetraselenavalene, ferrocene, phthalocyanine, or porphyrin.

Condensation of 1,2-diamino-4,5-bis(n-alkoxy)arenes with an oligopyridyl-type alpha-diketone afforded a series of long-chain pyridine-quinoxaline hybrids. These were evaluated for their ability to self-assemble with tetrahedral Cu(I) and Ag(I) to form dimeric, double-decker amphiphillic complexes having a flattened metallocyclophane topology. Detailed NOESY and T-1 relaxation time experimentation showed that the configuration of the dicoppper (I) complexes corresponds to inversion (meso) symmetry, which leads to an extended molecular shape, wherein the alkoxy chains of the individual ligand components lie on opposite sides of the metallocyclophane core, as opposed to the same side. Preliminary measurements show that the disilver(I) complexes having (C12H25)-C-n and (C18H37)-C-n chains exhibit reversible melting processes and undergo two endothermic transitions each, at 189/237 and 59/80 degrees C, respectively.
