Synthesis and characterization of fluorescent 4,6-disubstituted-3-cyano-2-methylpyridines

4,6-Disubstituted-3-cyano-2-methylpyridines, easily prepared by treating alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds with beta-aminocrotononitrile in the presence of potassium tert-butoxide, have been found to show intense fluorescence in the region of 400-552 nm. 3-Cyano-4,6-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-and 3-cyano-4,6-di(2-furyl)-2-methylpyridines show more intense fluorescence than 7-diethylamino-4-methylcoumarin. The 3-cyano group of pyridines increases the fluorescence intensities and improves photostabilities.

The present invention relates to the discovery of novel compounds that can be used to treat and/or prevent heart failure in a subject. In certain embodiments, the compounds of the invention are sulfide: quinone oxidoreductase (SQOR) inhibitors. In other embodiments, the compounds of the invention increase physiological levels of H2S in the subject. In yet other embodiments, administration of the compounds of the invention treats and/or prevents hypertension, and/or atherosclerosis, and/or pathological cardiac remodeling that leads to heart failure in the subject.

A small cyclic RNA of c‐di‐AMP and Cu2+ ions could assemble into an artificialmetalloribozyme, that is able to catalyze the enantioselectiveDiels–Alderreactions with up to 80 % ee . The presence of c‐di‐AMP in the metalloribozyme not only achieves the chirality transfer but also gives rise to a significant rate enhancement.
