  Colour photographic element comprising a support and coated thereon at least one alkali-permeable light-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer incorporating in said emulsion layer or in an adjacent layer in water-­permeable relationship therewith a non-diffusing colour coupler capable of reacting in alkaline medium with the oxidation product of a p-phenylene diamine colour developing agent to form a cyan, magenta, or yellow dye, and said coupler being an alkali-labile coupler, whose capability to enter into a coupling reaction with oxidized p-phenylene diamine colour developing agent in said alkaline medium is gradually lost as a result of an alkali-induced reaction of said coupler. The invention also provides a method of avoiding lack of definition in dye images produced by chromogenic development including a coupling reaction in alkaline medium between oxidized p-phenylene diamine developing agent and a said alkali-­labile coupler.
