Some 2-alkyl-6-hydroxy[1,3,4]thiadiazolo[2,3-b]benzimidazoles have been synthesised. Their absorptionspectra at different pH show bathochromic shift of the absorption band in the longer wavelengths, which is more pronounced in basic medium. This is ascribed to the dipolar nature of the compounds. Quaternary derivatives of the compounds show a further red shift in the absorption band in the visible
