    asymmetric Michael‐type Friedel–Crafts alkylation of indoles with arylidene malonates was developed. The reaction proceeds under ambient atmosphere using a chiral bis(oxazoline)copper catalyst in a mixer mill. Under these reaction conditions nineteen 3‐substituted indole derivatives were synthesized in good to excellent yields (up to 98 %), and with good enantioselectivities (up to 91:9 e.r.) after short milling

    3,4-Dihydropyridones of the formula ##SPC1## Wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen, straight or branched chain alkyl, or --COOR' wherein R' is a straight, branched or cyclic, saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon or said hydrocarbon interrupted by 1 or 2 oxygen atoms; R.sup.2 is a straight, branched or cyclic, saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon, aryl unsubstituted or substituted by 1 to 3 of the same or different substituents selected from the group consisting of alkyl, alkoxy, halogen, nitro, cyano, trifluoromethyl, carbalkoxy and SO.sub.n --alkyl wherein n is 0, 1 or 2, or naphthyl, quinolyl, isoquinolyl, pyridyl, pyrimidyl, thenyl, furyl or pyrryl unsubstituted or substituted by 1 or more substituents selected from the group consisting of alkyl, alkoxy and halogen; and R.sup.3 is a straight or branched chain hydrocarbon or said hydrocarbon interrupted by 1 or 2 oxygen atoms, are produced by reacting an .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated carboxylic acid ester of the formula ##EQU1## wherein R is alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl, and R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are as above defined, with an amidine of the formula ##EQU2## wherein R.sup.3 is as above defined. These compounds are useful as coronary agents and as anti-hypertensive agents.

    A composition useful for molding into articles such as food containers, soft drink bottles, cured structural plastics and the like, comprising molding grade linear or unsaturated polyester or polycarbonate having reacted or copolymerized therein the residue of one or a mixture of methine reactants of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl radical; A is an unsubstituted or substituted 1,4-phenylene radical; R.sup.2 is hydrogen or an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl or aryl radical; R.sup.3 is cyano, ##STR2## or an unsubstituted or substituted carbamoyl, alkanoyl, aroyl, alkylsulfonyl, arylsulfonyl, aryl or aromatic heterocyclic radicals. The methine residues are present in the polymer as an integral part of the polymer chain and absorb ultraviolet radiation in the range of about 250 to about 390 nm. The residues are non-extractable from the polymer and stable at the conditions at which the polymers are manufactured and processed.
