A simple nickel catalyst system stabilised by readily available nitrogen ligands enables a series of interesting E-configured vinylarenes (confirmed by X-ray crystal-structure analysis) to be synthesised in good to excellent yields with olefin/alkane selectivity of >20 : 1.
