    Injectable PEG-analogue hydrogels based on poly(oligoethylene glycol methacrylate) have been developed based on complementary hydrazide and aldehyde reactive linear polymer precursors. These hydrogels display the desired biological properties of PEG, form covalent networks in situ following injection, and are easily modulated for improved control over their functionality and physiochemical properties.

    The invention relates to a process for the manufacture of a molding comprising the steps of a) preparing an aqueous solution comprising a water-soluble prepolymer having crosslinkable groups and a further polymer which is devoid of crosslinkable groups, b) introducing the solution obtained into a mold, c) triggering the crosslinking, and d) opening the mold such that the molding can be removed from the mold. According to the process of the invention moldings such as contact lenses may be manufactured with an improved quality and an improved overall yield.

    The invention relates to a novel process for the manufacture of mouldings, especially contact lenses, in which a soluble prepolymer comprising crosslinkable groups is crosslinked in solution, and also to mouldings, especially contact lenses, obtainable in accordance with that process. The present invention relates also to novel prepolymers that can be used in the process according to the invention, especially derivatives of a polyvinyl alcohol having a molecular weight of at least about 2000 that, based on the number of hydroxy groups of the polyvinyl alcohol, comprise from approximately 0.5 to approximately 80% of units of formula I ##STR1## wherein R is lower alkylene having up to 8 carbon atoms, R.sup.1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl and R.sup.2 is an olefinically unsaturated, electron-attracting, copolymerisable radical preferably having up to 25 carbon atoms, to crosslinked polymers, either homo- or co-polymers of those novel prepolymers, to processes for the preparation of the novel prepolymers and the homo- and co-polymers obtainable therefrom, to mouldings made from the said homo- or co-polymers, especially contact lenses made from those homo- or co-polymers, and to processes for the manufacture of contact lenses using the said homo- or co-polymers.

    A gas hydrate formation inhibitor consisting of an amphiphilic polymer (such as N-isopropylmethacrylamide (co)polymer) which bears nonionic groups (such as hydroxyl groups) at the polymerization-initiation and -termination ends and has a weight-average molecular weight of 500 to 10,000; and a method for inhibiting gas hydrate formation by adding the gas hydrate formation inhibitor to a system wherein a gas hydrate is to be formed. According to this invention, the formation of gas hydrates can be inhibited, and gas hydrates can be stabilized from the viewpoints of theories of chemical equilibrium and rate process.

    The invention relates to a biomedical molding, in particular a contact lens, which is obtainable by crosslinking, in a mold, an aqueous solution of a crosslinkable polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) prepolymer comprising at least 0.5 weight-%, based on the entire formulation, of a non-reactive PVA, wherein the number-average molecular weight of the non-reactive PVA is higher than that of the crosslinkable PVA. A contact lens of the invention has an improved wearing comfort.
