The present invention provides a process for preparing a modified lipid of the formula
comprising reacting
(I) a compound of the formula; and
(ii) a compound of the formula
wherein component (ii) is formulated as a liposome; wherein B is a lipid; wherein A is a moiety of interest (MOI) and is a hydrocarbyl group; wherein X is an optional linker group;
wherein R
1
is H or a hydrocarbyl group; and
wherein R
2
is a lone pair, H or a hydrocarbyl group.
The moiety of interest A may be selected from a carbohydrate moiety, a polymer, a peptide, a glycoprotein, a small biomolecule (such as a folic acid derivative) and a bioconjugate linker.

Novel inhibitors of polyamine transport having inhibition constants two orders of magnitude lower than those of known compounds are disclosed. These polyamine analogues are useful pharmaceutical agents for treating disease where it is desired to inhibit polyamine transport or other polyamine binding proteins, for example cancer and post-angioplasty injury. Novel chemical synthetic methods to obtain polyamine analogues are disclosed, including the production of a combinatorial polyamine library. These approaches yield analogues with desirable activities both for diagnostic and research assays and therapy. The assays of the invention are useful for high throughput screening of targets in the discovery of drugs that interact with the polyamine system.

Particles capable of being bound by viruses, having a particle diameter of 0.05 &mgr;m to 300 &mgr;m and having either a cationic group or an anionic group or both at their surfaces. Also disclosed are a method of separating or detecting viruses and a virus-separating reagent, which make use of such particles. The particles enable simultaneous and simple treatment of a large number of specimens by a simple means.
A sol-gel coating composition comprising a hydrolysed organosilane, an organometallic precursor and a corrosion inhibitor, wherein the corrosion inhibitor is a chelator for the organometallic precursor. The corrosion inhibitor and the organometallic precursor may form a nanoparticulate complex. The coating composition may comprise one or more additive selected from: an antimicrobial additive, a hardener, a water repelling additive, a dye, a scratch resistant additive and a flexibility enhancing additive. A process for preparing a sol gel coating composition is also described, the process comprising the steps of: hydrolysing an organosilane in the presence of a catalyst; chelating an organometallic precursor; mixing the hydrolysed silane and the chelated organometallic precursor; and hydrolysing the organosilane-organometallic precursor mixture.
