An oxidant- and metal-free photoelectrocatalytic C–H alkylation reaction of heteroarenes with alkyl oxalates has been developed. Several classes of heteroaromatics, such as quinolines, isoquinolines, pyridines, and phenanthridines, can be alkylated with tertiary or secondary alkyl oxalates.
