    The present invention provides a compound represented by formula (i), a liquid crystal composition using the compound, and a liquid crystal display device using the liquid crystal composition. The compound represented by formula (i) has a partial structure K i1 represented by any of general formulas (K-1) to (K-17) and further has ring B having at least two P-Sp- groups. Therefore, when used for a liquid crystal composition, the compound adsorbs to substrates sandwiching the liquid crystal composition (liquid crystal layer) and allows liquid crystal molecules to be held such that they are aligned in a vertical direction without a PI layer, and improved alignment stability and low-temperature storage stability can be achieved.

    A liquid crystal composition is provided that satisfies at least one characteristic among the characteristics such as a high maximum temperature of a nematic phase, a low minimum temperature of a nematic phase, a small viscosity, a large optical anisotropy, a large dielectric anisotropy, a large specific resistance, a high stability to ultraviolet light and a high stability to heat, or is properly balanced regarding at least two characteristics. An AM device is provided that has a short response time, a large voltage holding ratio, a large contrast ratio, a long service life and so forth. The liquid crystal composition contains a specific compound having especially negatively large dielectric anisotropy as the first component,a specific bicyclic compound having a small viscosity as the second component, a specific compound having a high maximum temperature as the third component, a specific compound having a negatively large dielectric anisotropy, a low minimum temperature as the fourth component. The liquid crystal composition has a negative dielectric anisotropy. The liquid crystal display device contains the liquid crystal composition.

    The invention relates to an electro-optical liquid-crystal display which contains, as dielectric, a liquid-crystalline medium having negative dielectric anisotropy and includes a backlight which essentially only emits light having a wavelength of 400 nm or more or has, between the liquid-crystal layer and the backlight, a cut-off filter which essentially only allows light having a wavelength of 420 nm or more to pass through. In particular, the liquid-crystalline medium comprises a) a (first) dielectrically negative component (component A) which consists of one or more dielectrically negative compounds of the formula I in which the parameters have the meanings indicated in claim 2 , and a further (second) dielectrically negative component (component B). Very particular preference is given to the use of the liquid-crystalline media in an electro-optical display, particularly in an active-matrix display based on the VA, ECB, PSVA, FFS or IPS effect and very particularly in displays which use an LED backlight.
