    The present invention relates to metathesis syntheses for insect sex-attractant pheromones or their components, such as E-5-decenyl acetate, the major component of the Peach Twig Borer pheromone; (5R, 6S)-6-acetoxy-5-hexadecanolide, the mosquito oviposition attractant pheromone; E9, Z11-hexadecadienal, the pecan nut casebearer moth pheromone; 9-tetradecenyl formate, an analog of the Diamondback Moth (DBM) pheromone; 11-tetradecenyl acetate, the Omnivorous Leafroller (OLR) pheromone; E-4-tridecenyl acetate, the major component of the Tomato Pinworm (TPW) pheromone; E,E-8,10-dodecadienol, the Codling Moth (CM) pheromone. The syntheses preferably employ a Class I-IV metathesis catalyst, entail few reaction steps, use generally commercially available starting materials, and have relatively short process times. These syntheses produce good yields without the need for expensive or sophisticated equipment. The invention also provides an inexpensive route for producing omega-haloalkenols by cross-metathesizing alpha-omega-diacetoxy alkenes and alpha-omega-dihalides to yield omega-haloalkenols, which are easily converted into omega-haloalkanols under traditional hydrogenation methods.

    The present invention relates to a succinic diester polymer which is used in the preparation of water-in-oil macroemulsions. Said polymer, which has an excellent ability to stabilize a water-in-oil macroemulsion, has the formula (I) wherein L is a polyalkenyl group having a number average molecular weight of from 600 to 1,500, A1 and A2 independently are poly(alkyleneoxy) chains with a molecular weight of from 500 to 1,200, where each alkyleneoxy group contains 2 or 3 carbon atoms and the number of alkyleneoxy groups being ethyleneoxy groups is at least 50% of the total number of alkyleneoxy groups, and R1 and R2 independently are alkyl groups having of from 1 to 3 carbons atoms. The succinic diester polymer may also be combined with one or more surfactants having a hydrocarbon group or acyl group of 8-22 carbon atoms, which surfactants are selected from the group consisting of alkoxylated alcohols, alkoxylated amines, amine oxides containing alkyleneoxy groups, alkoxylated esters, alkoxylated acids, alkoxylated amides, sugar surfactants, and compounds of the formula: R 3 O—C(O)—R 4 —C(O)—N(R 1 )—(CH 2 ) n —NH—C(O)—R 2 (II) wherein R 1 and R 2 are independently selected from C 8 -C 22 alkyl/alkenyl groups, R 3 is a hydrogen or a C 1 -C 5 alkyl group, R 4 is a C 1 -C 5 alkylene or alkenylene group, and n is an integer of from 2-5, with the weight ratio between succinic diester polymer and surfactant being 1:9 to 9:1. The emulsions of the invention can be used as a diesel fuel, a gasoline fuel, a heating fuel, a dry cleaning liquid, a metalworking fluid or a personal care formulation.

    A process for isomerization of natural jojoba oil, a wax-type ester is based on contacting jojoba oil, essentially all cis-configuration with an acidic bentonite-type clay at temperatures in the range 150-350°C. The resulting isomerates, predominately of trans-configuration have melting points in the range 25° to about 44°C. Also included are useful isomorphous compositions of the trans-isomerates of jojoba oil with hydrogenated jojoba oil. These compositions are useful as candle waxes, non-stick cooking sprays, cosmetic vehicles, carriers for solid "detergent" soaps, lether treatments, hand modifiers for textiles including both woven and non-woven fabrics.

    Monounsaturated fatty alcohols are sulfated with minimal reaction at the double bond by using a multistage sulfation process in which the sulfating agent is chlorosulfonic acid, or a dioxane complex of chlorosulfonic acid or sulfur trioxide. The sulfation is carried out in a refluxing solvent medium, followed by ammonia or amine neutralization at each stage.
