Treatment of 6,7-epoxyhumula-2,9-diene (1) with 1.8 M H2SO4–Me2CO (1:1) at room temperature gave a novel tricyclic diol shown to be 5,9-dihydroxy-4,8,11,11-tetramethyltricyclo [6.3.0.02,4]undecane (8a; diol B), besides tricyclohumuladiol (2; diol A), humulenol-II (3), a diol C (4a), a diol D (4b), and an acetonide (7), while the same reaction at O °C yielded only 2. The results together with a time-dependent product analysis showed the initial formation of 2, which then transformed into 3, 4a, 4b, 7, and 8a.
