    Abstract 1-Carboxyethylidene acetals (formed by pyruvic acid) are labile to acid. Consequently, when an aqueous solution of an acidic oligosaccharide is examined by p.m.r. spectroscopy at 95°, the acetal is progressively hydrolyzed.
