  The asymmetric Diels-Alder reaction of chiral l-[2-(p-tolylsulfinyl)-indolyl enones was examined. The cycloaddition of cinnamyl and crotonyl α,β-unsaturated enones with cyclopentadiene in the presence of a lanthanoid triflate as a Lewis acid proceeds smoothly to give the corresponding endo cycloadducts with high diastereoselectivity.

  The asymmetric conjugate addition of arylcopper reagents to chiral 1-[2-(p-tolylsulfinyl)]indolyl and 1-[3-(p-tolylsulfinyl)]indolyl enones was examined.
