The synthesis of 22 substituted tricarbonyl compounds is reported. They were obtained either by oxidation of β-dicarbonyl compounds with SeO2 or nitrous oxides or by oxidation of the α-bromo-β-dicarbonyl compounds with DMSO. The procedures using SeO2 or DMSO are more rapid and give in general better yields than other methods described in the literature.
Direct Synthesis of 1,2-Diketones by Catalytic Aerobic Oxidative Decarboxylation of 1,3-Diketones with Iodine and Base under Irradiation of Fluorescent Light
We report a catalyticdirect synthesis of 1,2-diketone from 1,3-diketone through iodine/base-catalyzed aerobic photooxidation under visible-light irradiation of fluorescent lamp.

Quick on the uptake: Uranium(III) complexes bearing hexadentate triazacyclononane macrocyclic ligands L1 engage di‐ and triketones in both one‐ and two‐electron reduction pathways. The dinuclear enolate generated through one of these pathways reacts with carbon dioxide to generate a new CC bond (see scheme).
