Protein and polypeptid derivatives and th ir salts are claimed characteriz d in that a prot in or polypeptide is conjugated via an int rmediat grouping containing at least one radical of the formula —C(R)═N— (or —N═C(R)—) or —CH(R)—NH— (or —NH—CH(R)—), wherein R is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon residue which may be substituted, with the same or a different protein or polypeptide, with a reporter group or a cytotoxic agent as well as a process for their preparation and the novel intermediates therefor.

1-(P-Benzenediazonium)-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid is described. This material is a chelating agent which forms stable complexes with the ions of heavy metals including those having radioactive properties and also reacts readily and rapidly with biological molecules. The compound is a versatile reactive agent useful in introducing metal ions into biological molecules.

A group of functionalized amine chelants having ortho ligating functionality that form complexes with rare-earth type metal ions are disclosed. The complexes can be covalently attached to an antibody or antibody fragment and used for therapeutic and/or diagnostic purposes. In addition certain of the chelant-radionuclide complexes can be effectively employed in compositions useful as therapeutic and/or diagnostic agents for calcific tumors and/or relief of bone pain.
