The reaction of (2,4,6-(t)Bu3C6H2O)((c)C5Me5)P(Cl), I, with NaMn(CO)5, II, affords in 90% yield the terminal neutral phosphenium ion complex [(2,4,6-(t)Bu3C6H2O)((c)C5Me5)]P = Mn(CO)4, III. III is an example of a stable lambda-4-phosphanediyl compound with a formal phosphorus manganese double bond. The synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of III are discussed.
