A totalsynthesis of the ergotalkaloid paliclavine (20), in optically active form is described. The synthesis scheme is based on the intramolecular dipolar cycloaddition reaction of a nitrile oxide to a neighboring olefinic appendage bearing an allylic asymmetric center.
