  Catalytic hydrogenation of (2-nitrophenyl)acetonitriles bearing an electron-withdrawing substituent alpha to the nitrile, using Pd/C and (Ph3P)(4)Pd, affords N-hydroxy-2-aminoindoles in good to excellent yields.
