                                Trans-[Ru(NH3)4{P(OEt)3}2]3+ ions were generated by electrochemical oxidation of the corresponding trans-[Ru(NH3)4{P(OEt)3}2]2+ ions. The oxidation is quantitative and reversible and the resulting complex absorbs at 292 nm (epsilon = 5.9 x 10(2) M-1 cm-1). ESR spectra of frozen solutions are compatible with axial symmetry D4h, with g(parallel-to) = 1.83 and g(perpendicular-to) = 2.36. Aqueous solutions of the ruthenium(III) complex yield trans-[Ru(NH3)4{P(OEt)3}(H2O)]2+ as the main product upon ageing.
