2-, 3-, 4-, and 6-Methyl- and 6-methoxycyclopenta[a]phenanthren-17-ones were prepared from appropriately substituted naphthalenes or tetralones, through Stobbe condensation of the corresponding 1,2,3,4-tetrahydrophenanthren-1-ones. The synthesis of ketones labelled with 14C in ring D and in the 11-methyl group is also described.
