    A method for the alkylation of the imidazole backbone has been developed. Imidazole was protected with tetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-yl and chloro groups, respectively. The backbone (position 5) of imidazole was then lithiated and alkylated with haloalkanes, aldehydes, and ketones. The protective groups were removed by treatment with acid and base and hydrogenation.     The influence of lipophilic moieties attached to a 4-1H-imidazole ring on the histamine H-3 receptor activity was systematically investigated. Series of 4-(n-alkyl)-1H-imidazoles and 4-(omega-phenylalkyl)-1H-imidazoles were prepared, with an alkyl chain varying from 2-9 methylene groups and from 1-9 methylene groups, respectively. The compounds were tested for their activity on the H-3 receptor under in vitro conditions. For the 4-(n-alkyl)-1H-imidazoles the activity is proportional to chain length, ranging from a pA(2) value of 6.3 +/- 0.2 for 4-(n-propyl)-1H-imidazoIe to a pA(2) value of 7.2 +/- 0.1 for 4-(n-decyl)-1H-imidazole. For the series 4-(omega-phenylalkyl)-4H-imidazoles an optimum in H-3 activity was found for the pentylene spacer: 4-(omega-phenylpentyl)-1H-imidazole has a pA(2) value of 7.8 +/- 0.1.     An adhesive composition, an optical member, a surface protective film, and an adhesive sheet, the adhesive composition including 100 parts by weight of a (meth)acrylic copolymer having a weight average molecular weight of about 100,000 to about 2,000,000 g/mol; about 0.05 to about 5 parts by weight of a carbodiimide crosslinker, based on 100 parts by weight of the (meth)acrylic copolymer; and about 0.001 to about 5 parts by weight of an imidazole compound represented by Formula 1, based on 100 parts by weight of the (meth)acrylic copolymer: wherein, in Formula 1, R 1 , R 2 , and R 3 are each independently a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, or a substituted or unsubstituted C1 to C10 straight or branched alkyl group.
