The charge-transfercomplex formation has been examined in CH2Cl2 solution with 9,10-(o-benzeno)anthracene-1,4,5,8-tetraone and 5,18: 7,16:9,14-tri-(o-benzeno)heptacene-1,4,6,8,10,13,15,17-octaone derivatives as electron acceptors. The high formation constants and the relevant thermodynamic parameters were obtained for the 1:2 quinone-TTF complexes.
A practical and efficient method to synthesize iptycene quinones has been developed. As a result, a series of pentiptycene quinones 8−16 were conveniently synthesized by one-pot reaction of triptycene quinone 4 or 5 with anthracene 1 or its derivatives 2−3 in refluxing acetic acid in the presence of p-chloranil, followed by CAN oxidative demethylation. Similarly, a series of heptiptycene quinones 17−23

Compositions comprising bridged bicyclic-based compounds such as iptycene-based compounds and methods for mechanochemically synthesizing them are generally provided. In some cases, two or more polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons may be mechanochemically reacted such that the product comprises the bridged bicyclic-based compound. In some embodiments, the product may comprise two or more [2.2.2] bicyclic cores. In certain embodiments, the mechanochemical reactions described herein may produce higher order bridged bicyclic-based compounds such as oligoiptycenes or poly-iptycenes. In certain embodiments, the bridged bicyclic based compound comprises a molecular cage. Filter devices comprising such compounds are also disclosed.
