The relationship between molecular structure and mesogenic properties is explored for copper(II) complexes of alpha-substituted beta-dialdehydes and beta-diketones. The copper(II) complex of p-pentylphenylmalonaldehyde shows a nematic phase, but the presence of off-axial substituents or the removal of the aromatic ring precludes mesophase formation.
