Provided are a novel triphenyl phosphine derivative synthesized from a triphenylphosphine and a hydroxy-containing lactone; a palladium and a nickel complexes comprising the derivative as a ligand; and a process for preparing a biaryl derivative using the complex as a catalyst. A product can be easily separated from a catalyst or a phosphorus compound, and biaryl derivative can be synthesized in a higher yield, by using the complex of the present invention as a catalyst.

Abstract A new bis(terpyridine) derivative with a phenylacetylene framework was synthesized via a stepwise terpyridine construction strategy. We report in this contribution the synthesis and characterization of the two organoiron(H) (eta(2)-dppe)(eta(5)-C5Me5)FeC C-(5,2-C5H3N-X) compounds (X = Cl, 6a; X = Br, 6b) bearing a pendant halogenated m-pyridyl group. These new functional "metallo-ligands" allow for an original, convenient, and rapid synthetic access to the 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) ligand (3) bearing two redox-active "(eta(2)-dppe)(eta(5)-C5Me5)FeC C-" organometallic moieties grafted to the 5,5'-positions of bipy via a Pd-catalyzed homocoupling procedure.
