    A process for producing biofuels compounds directly from carboxylic acid esters recovered from a fermentation system is described. The process involves taking a fermentation broth that has been reduced to a dry powder containing free organic acids; reacting the carboxylic acid in the powder with an alcohol solvent under a CO 2 -containing atmosphere in substantial absence of any other acid catalyst at a reaction temperature and pressure that corresponds to supercritical, critical or near critical conditions for at least one of the alcohol or CO 2 to synthesize an ester, then subjecting the ester to either hydrogenolysis or hydrogenation to form a biofuel.

    White graft polymer dispersions in polyoxyalkylene polyether polyols are employed together with flame retardant compounds to prepare flame retardant polyurethane foams. The polymer dispersions employ less than 0.1 mole of induced unsaturation per mole of polyol mixture. improved processes for the preparation of these polymer dispersions employ either maleate or fumarate derived polyetherester polyols or polyetherester polyols prepared by reacting a polyoxyalkylene polyether polyol with a compound selected from the group consisting of maleic acid, maleic anhydride and fumaric acid and an alkylene oxide in the presence of salts and oxides of divalent metals.

    A film layer having a micro-textured surface is provided. The film layer has a continuous phase with one or more thermoplastic polymers, wherein at least one of the thermoplastic polymers is a low-modulus polymer having a 2% secant modulus of less than or equal to 140 MPa, and the film has from 10 wt % to 100 wt % of the low modulus thermoplastic polymer. The film layer also has a discrete phase with from 5 wt % to 45 wt % of a thermoplastic starch.

    A method of treatment is disclosed whereby a nitroxide compound is administered to a patient in a therapeutically effective amount. The nitroxide compound is comprised of a first portion which comprises a nitrogen atom and an oxygen atom bound directly together and an unpaired electron (.NO), and a second portion which provides a negative charge. The first and second portions are connected directly or indirectly by a linking group positioned between and bound to the first portion and the second portion in a manner such that the negative charge of the second portion stabilizes the .NO of the first portion when the nitroxide is present in the patient. By stabilizing the .NO portion of the molecule the nitroxide is allowed to interact with reactive oxygen species in the patient for a longer period of time and modulate adverse effects of those reactive oxygen species.
