Novel process for the preparation of azetidin-2-ones of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 independently from each other are hydrogen, or an organic group linked to the ring carbon via a carbon atom, a nitrogen atom or an oxygen atom, characterized in that a corresponding 4-acyloxyazetidin-2-one, which is substituted by a group --O--CO--R.sup.3 at the 4-position, wherein R.sup.3 is hydrogen or an organic radical stable at the reaction conditions, is reacted with a complex metal hydride comprising reactive hydride ions, such as, lithium borohydride, sodium borohydride, potassium borohydride, zinc borohydride or tetraorganoammonium borohydride.

contrast to the previously reported transformation using the same Ni(II) catalyst/8-aminoquinoline chelation system. The reaction is applicable to the synthesis of β-lactams from aliphatic amides as the substrate, in which C(sp3)–H bonds are activated. The results of deuterium labeling experiments indicate that the cleavage of C(sp3)–H bonds is also irreversible.

In this work, an aerobic copper-catalyzedintramolecularC(sp3)–H amidation has been disclosed, which presents a rare example of copper-catalyzed functionalization of an unactivatedC(sp3)–H bond with O2 as the sole oxidant. In addition, a new protocol for the preparation of a removable 5-methoxyquinolyl moiety has been documented.
