Electron paramagnetic resonance study on radiation reduction of dirhodium(II) [Rh2(O2CR)4] and [Rh2Cl2(O2CR)2(NN)2] complexes

Abstract Rhodium(II) complexes [Rh 2 (O 2 CR) 4 L 2 ] and [Rh 2 Cl 2 (O 2 CR) 2 (NN) 2 ] (R = H, Me, ( S )-PhCHOH, (NN) = 2,2′-bipyridine, 1,10-phenanthroline, L = solvent) in various solvents were reduced using 60 Co γ-rays. The resulting unstable species were detected and characterized by EPR spectroscopy. The main products of reduction were axially symmetric complexes containing the Rh 2 3+ core:
