The ability of gold-hydroxides to fix CO2 is reported. [Au(IPr)(OH)] and [Au(IPr)}2(μ-OH)][BF4] react with atmospheric CO2 to form the trigold carbonate complex [Au(IPr)}3(μ3-CO3)][BF4].

Double impact: The title method gives aryl vinylethers in high yields, short reaction times, Z‐stereospecificity, and good regioselectivities. Insights into the reaction mechanism highlight the role of [Au(NHC)}2(μ‐OH)][BF4] (NHC=N‐heterocyclic carbene) as both a Lewis acid, [Au(NHC)][BF4], and a Brønsted base, [Au(NHC)(OH)], thereby generating a synergistic effect between the two gold moieties.

Unconventional fluorination: The development of the chemoselective gold-catalysed hydrofluorination of terminal alkynes using aqueous HF and an easily accessible N-heterocyclic carbene-gold pre-catalyst is reported. Following the observation and isolation of unprecedented organometallic intermediates and computational studies, a catalytic cycle is proposed, featuring an in situ generation of the chemoselective
Gold (I) hydroxide complexes of the form Z-Au-OH and digold complexes of the form Z—Au-(μOH)—Au—Z where groups Z are two electron donors are provided. The groups Z may be carbenes, for example nitrogen containing heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), phosphines or phosphites. The complexes can be used as catalysts, for example in reactions such as hydration of nitriles, skeletal arrangement of enynes, alkoxycyclisation of enynes, alkyne hydration, the Meyer-Shuster reaction, 3,3′ rearrangement of allylic acetates, cyclisation of propargylic acetates, Beckman rearrangements and hydroamination. The complexes can be used in medicine, for example in the treatment of cancer.
