A process for the production of R-configuration or S-configuration optically active alcohol having the formula (1), CH.sub.3 C*H(OH)(CH.sub.2).sub.m OC.sub.n H.sub.2n+1 (1) wherein m is an integer of 3 to 5, n is an integer of 1 to 3, and C* is an asymmetric carbon, and the formula (2), which comprises carrying out the optical resolution of the racemic alcohol, CH.sub.3 CH(OH)(CH.sub.2).sub.m OC.sub.n H.sub.2n+1 (2) wherein m is an integer of 3 to 5 and n is an integer of 1 to 3, into an R-configuration compound and S-configuration compound by the asymmetric trans-esterification thereof is provided in the presence of vinyl propionate as an esterifying agent and a lipase as a catalyst.
