    substituents are present on the anthracene residue, high amounts of anthrones are formed. These anthrones can be considered to result from a vinylogous pinacol rearrangement of the initial diol.   • Substituent effects on the electrocatalytic reduction of oxygen on quinone-modified glassy carbon electrodes

    The reduction of oxygen catalysed by two sulfur-containing derivatives of anthraquinone has been investigated. The quinones were chemically grafted to a glassy carbon electrode surface and the oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline solution followed a two-electron pathway yielding hydrogen peroxide. The mechanism proposed corresponds to an electrochemical–chemical (EC) reaction where the semiquinone radical anion electrochemically formed reacts chemically with oxygen. The influence on reactivity of electron withdrawing groups present in the quinone molecules has been studied and it is shown that there is an unexpected small dependence between reactivity and standard potential of the grafted quinones. It is shown that steric effects appear important in determining their electrocatalytic properties.

    A material suitable for a guest-host liquid crystal device comprises a solution of a liquid crystal material and a pleochroic dye wherein the pleochroic dye comprises at least one compound having a formula: ##STR1## wherein: R represents a group selected from optionally substituted alkyl and optionally substituted monocyclic aryl; Q represents a group selected from halo, OH, --NO.sub.2, alkyl, aryl and --NR.sub.1 R.sub.2, wherein each of R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 independently represents a group selected from H, alkyl and aryl; x represents an integer from 1 to 4; and y represents an integer from 0 to 4; x+y being in the inclusive range 2 to 4; provided that when x+y=2, x=1 and y=1.

    Liquid crystal compositions containing pleochroic dyes. The pleochroic dyes are substituted anthraquinone dyes containing at least one carbocyclic or heterocyclic group linked to the anthraquinone moiety through a sulfur atom. The dyes are used in guest-host combinations with nematic liquid crystal compositions having positive dielectric anisotropy. Electro-optic devices containing these guest-host combinations are disclosed.
