Reactions of perfluoroalkylcalcium derivatives with ketones and aldehydes

Perfluoroalkyl iodides, RFI, react in ethers with aldehydes and ketones in the presence of calcium to give the alcohols RFC(OH)R1R2. The best yields (20–70%) were obtained with Ca/Hg amalgam in THF as solvent at −20 to −40°C. The new alcohols were characterized by 1H and 19F NMR and mass spectrometry. The results are interpreted in terms of the intermediate formation of an organocalcium species.

Perfluoroalkylcalcium derivatives, prepared by the action of perfluoroalkyl iodides on amalgamated calcium in ethers, react with aldehydes and ketones to give the expected alcohols in 20–70% yields.
A composition for an absorption refrigerator, which contains at least one fluorinated alcohol refrigerant containing 2 to 10 carbon atoms, is liquid at ordinary temperature, and becomes volatile upon heating under ordinary or reduced pressure, and at least one absorbent having a higher boiling point than said refrigerant at ordinary pressure and being capable of absorbing said refrigerant; and an absorption-refrigerating system using said composition.

A series of fluorinated beta-diketones, RfC(O)CH2C(O)R-f, (R-f = C6F13, R-f, = CF3; R-f = R-f, = C6F13, C7F15), have been prepared in reasonable yields by a two-step synthesis. On reaction with appropriate metal substrates, deprotonation and concurrent coordination of the perfluoroalkyl-derivatised beta-diketonate ligands affords a range of fluorous metal complexes which have been characterised by elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, IR and NMR spectroscopies. The structures of [Cu(L-L)(2)(H2O)(2)] L-L= CF3C(O)CHC(O)C6F13, C6F13C(O)CHC(O)C6F13} and [Cu(PPh3)(2)C7F15C(O)CHC(O)C7F15}] have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.
