Alkenyl (or aryl) iodide (or bromide) is readily reduced with CrCl2 is N,N-dimethylformamide at 25°C to gice the corresponding organochromium species which adds selectively to an aldehyde moiety without affecting the coexisting ketone or cyano group of the substrate.

The inventive subject matter relates to novel processes for making an epoxy alcohol from an aldehyde, comprising the steps of: (a) adding (i) an organozinc compound or (ii) divinylzinc compound and an diorganozinc compound to said aldehyde in the presence of a first catalyst to form an allylic alkoxide compound; and (b) epoxidizing said allylic alkoxide compound in the presence of an oxidant and a second catalyst.

The diastereoselective hydroformylation of 2-methyl-1-1-alken-3-ol and 5-t-butyl-2-methylene-cyclohexanol derivatives gave threo- and erythro-gamma-hydroxyalkanal derivatives in ratios up to 82 : 18, contrary to the results observed for hydroxy-directed hydrogenation of the corresponding allylic alcohols.
