Allylcobaloximes react under very mild conditions with ethyl bromomalonate to yield allyl-substituted ethylmalonates in good yield. In the case of crotyl-, 3,3 dimethyl, allyl- and cinnamyl-cobaloximes, the substitution occurs with total rearrangement of the allyl groups. Metal catalyst compounds are disclosed. The catalyst compound are represented by the formula (I-II and VII): wherein M is a Group 8 metal; X is an anionic ligand; L is a neutral two electron donor ligand; K 2(A-E) is a ditopic or multitopic ligand.
