    A fluorescent macrocyclic anion receptor based on the 2,6-bis(2-anilinoethynyl)pyridine scaffold has been synthesized to investigate the mechanism of fluorescence quenching in this class of compounds. X-ray crystallography reveals that the binding pocket of the receptor is a natural host to both H2O and HCl, accommodating either molecule in nearly identical environments. Our studies show that protonation, not collisional quenching, is responsible for the observed fluorescence quenching response.

    It is to provide a liquid crystal aligning agent capable of forming a liquid crystal alignment film having favorable electrical characteristics, and excellent in the storage stability and the productivity. A liquid crystal aligning agent comprising at least one member selected from a polyamic acid obtained by polymerization of a diamine component with a tetracarboxylic dianhydride component, and a polyimide obtained by cyclodehydration of the polyamic acid, characterized in that the diamine component contains at least one of diamines represented by the following formula [1]: H 2 N-A-R—NH 2 [1] wherein A is a bivalent organic group comprising a benzene ring or an aromatic condensed ring, provided that one or more optional hydrogen atoms in the benzene ring or the aromatic condensed ring may be substituted by a monovalent organic group other than an amino group, and R is a C 1-10 bivalent saturated hydrocarbon group.

    Vulcanizable or vulcanized diene elastomers containing stabilizing amounts of 6-oxy-2,2,4-trialkyl-1, 2-dihydroquinoline derivatives of the formula wherein the R1's are lower alkyl radicals, R is a straight or branched chain radical having the formula CnH2n+2-x where n is an integer from one to ten and x is an integer from two to four, show resistance to ozone attack. The 6-oxy-2,2,4- trialkyl-1, 2-dihydroquinoline derivatives themselves are novel compounds.

    Thermotropic copolyazomethines having a mesophase temperature range lying within a desired range of values are obtained by copolymerizing terephthalic aldehyde with at least two different 1,n-bis(4-aminophenoxy)alkanes. Such copolya omethines are particularly useful as reinforcing materials for the usual thermoplastic poly­mers, such as polycarbonate, polybutyleneterephthalate, polyethyleneterephthalate and polyamides.
