BOC- and Cbz-protected alpha-amino aldehydes derived from amino acids undergo stereoselective addition reactions with alkyl cuprates and manganese reagents, the chelation-controlled adducts being the major diastereomers (generally ds > 90%). Undesired racemization is not observed (ee > 99%).
